Scorchers Cubs History
The team is associated with the Northeast
Ohio Roy Hobbs Baseball organization.
The team name was originally the Crawdads, after the Hickory
Crawdads,
the "A" affiliate of the Pittsburgh
Pirates. The 2001
season was the last as the Crawdads. Although the season started
off with a promising 3-2 record, the team finished with an 11 game
losing streak and record of 3-13. The season ended with a first
round loss in the playoffs.
In 2002, the team decided to change their name to the Cubs, after
the Chicago
Cubs of Major
League Baseball. The new uniforms improved
our appearance, but the performance on the field did not improve.
The team finished the year with a 2-14 record after starting 0-8.
Some players had off years, some were injured, others were adjusting
to playing baseball again. The team hopes to put it all together
in 2003 and have a good season.
The 2003 season was a year of ups and downs and improvement. The
team started out 0-3, went 5-3 in the next 8 games, and then finished
0-4. The season ended with a first round playoff loss and a 7th
place finish in the national division, out of ten teams. The final
record of 5-10 gave the team as many wins as the last two years
combined. Included in the 10 losses were three, one run losses.
So with a few breaks here and there, the team could have finished
with a .500 record. The pitching and defense was greatly improved
this year. The hitting still needs to be more consistent, but there
were also some bright spots and improvement in this area as well.
Overall, the team feels better about this season then the previous
two and hopes to take the next step forward and contend for the
division next season.
The 2004 season was a year of continued improvement and firsts.
An influx of new talent helped the Cubs to a regular season record
of 6-9, best in team history, and a 9th place finish out of the
12 team open metal division. Though a loss is a loss, the team remained
competitive in most of the losses and even the losses provided optimism
for next year. The 2004 team also proved to be much better offensively
then in previous years. The team hit 12 home runs with Brenner hitting
for the cycle in one game. The pitching still struggled at times
but helped us remain in most games better than in past years. Of
course, the highlight of the year was a 13-10 victory over the Spiders
in the first round of the playoffs for the first playoff win in
team history. Though the season ended with a 12-0 loss in the second
round to the Barons, the team ended the season feeling some improvement
had been made and with the core of players now on the team, better
things are yet to come.
The 2005 season started with a sense that this could be the year
to challenge the upper teams in the league. After a slow 4-4 start,
the team rebounded to win 6 of the final 7 games to finish 10-5,
best in team history, and in 4th place in the open metal division,
best finish in team history. However, the season ended sooner than
expected with a first round loss in the playoffs to the Pirates,
a disappointing end to a successful season. The 2005 team remained
one of the top offensive teams in the league, but pitching continues
to be a problem, forcing the team to try and out score most teams
to win. This will continue to prevent success in the playoffs unless
we can find additional pitchers to help the couple consistent ones
we have on the team. With some additional pitching, the 2006 season
could prove to be a very successful one. |
